Coming Destruction (Amos 5:1-3)
- Amos prophecies a message of complete destruction of Israel
- Gave the message at a time Israel felt its most secure
Coming Destruction (Amos 5:16-17)
- No place in the nation will go untouched
- Squares & Streets
- Farms & Vineyards
- This judgment is brought about by God
- "Pass through your midst" language echoes 10th plague of Egypt
- Thought they wre exempt from God's judgment
- Amos: "You aren't God's people; you are Egypt"
How Should They Respond? (Amos 5:4-6)
- "Seek God and live"
- Not about going through religious motions
How Should They Respond? (Amos 5:14-15)
- Seeking God plays out in one's character and actions towards others
- Seeking/loving what is good and avoiding/hating what is evil
The Sins of Israel (Amos 5:7)
- Continues elaborating on what he said in chapter 4
- Turning justice to wormwood
- What was meant to be sweet into something bitter
The Sins of Israel (Amos 5:10-13)
- Dishonest courts
- Persecuting the righteous
- Oppressing the poor
The Character of God (Amos 5:8-9)
- Overwhelming power
- But wielded by a good, gracious, merciful God
The Character of God (Ex 34:5-6)
- Overwhelming power
- But wielded by a good, gracious, merciful God
- Demonstrated in the Son of God coming for us
- This grace is offered to all who would receive it
