Speaking on Behalf of God

July 3, 2022 Preacher: Trent Henderson Series: Amos

Scripture: Amos 7, Psalm 40:8–10

Wrestled with God (Amos 7:1-6)

  • Heard from God
  • Impacted by Word
  • Responsive to Word

Psalm 40:8-10

Confidence in the Word of God (Amos 7:7)

  • It has what it needs to pass the test (and judge others)
  • Sufficiency of the Script: in the Bible, God has given us what we need to know Him by faith and follow Him in obedience

Willingness to say what is seen (Amos 7:8-9)

  • Not always popular, easy to say, or easy to hear
  • Not the opinion of the speaker
    • Point to it in the text
    • Fit into the broader story of Scripture
    • Righly place myself in the story

Readiness for the blowback (Amos 7:10-13)

  • Misrepresentation (Amos 7:10-11)
  • Temptation (Amos 7:12)
  • Threat (Amos 7:13)

Rests in authority of God (Amos 7:14-15)

  • God too me and said go
  • God said to prophesy
  • God said to go to Israel

Speaks God's Word faithfully (Amos 7:16-17)

  • "I must preach even if you say I can't"
  • "This is unpleasant for all of us"
