August 4, 2024 Preacher: Trent Henderson Series: 1 & 2 Peter Summer Study

Scripture: 2 Peter 2:17–22

2 Pet 2:17-22

Nature of False Teachers

  • Empty - hope without fulfillment
  • Immoral - ethics do not conform to the New Testament
    • Two main areas: sexual immorality and greed (2 Pet 2:2-3)
  • Apostate - in and around but never of the faith

Nature of False Teaching

  • Allows and promotes immorality
  • Targets new believers
  • Often loud and attention-seeking
Pastoral Notes
  1. Watch your spiritual inputs and influences
  2. If you walk in darkness, you're more likely to be deceived
  3. Denying or diluting plain ethical standards are huge red flags
  4. Consistent requests for money are flashing yellow lights

2 Pet 2:1-3

How the Story Ends

  • Judgment - the guilty verdict
    • See 2 Cor 5:10, Heb 9:27, Acts 17:31
  • Wrath - the just punishment
    • See 1 Thes 1:10, Matt 12:36, Rom 1:18-32
    • Biblical images: Worms, Fire, Darkness, Teeth Gnashing
