Phil 2:1-4
Unity (v. 2)
- Mindset - clear-headed on what we hold in common
- Love - genuine desire for God's best (with intent and action accompanying)
- "One-souled" - belong to one another
The unity within the Philippian church allowed them to withstand the forces outside the church that worked against the Gospel's advance.
Phil 2:3-4
Humility (v. 3-4)
- Its opposite - selfish ambition and conceit
- Its content - significance of other
- Its expression - look out for interests of others
Examples
- You can make others look good without worrying about making them look too good
- You can make sure others can take the spotlight and you're ok
- You can make sure that you are not the center of the story or always bring the story back around to you
- You can listen without being the Pez dispenser of advice
- You can value others without using them or leveraging them to get your way
- You can do generosity (of any form) without needing recognition
- You can see insecurities and speak to those and not weaponize them
- You can live with your troubles without them dominating you or your relationship with others (forever Eeyore)
- You can deal with facts without assuming the worst intentions or motivations
- You can be inconvenienced for someone's sake without bitterness (knowing that you are sometimes an inconvenience for someone else)
Phil 2:1
Fuel (v. 1)
- Encouragement in Christ - received from Him and those in Him
- Comfort from love - arms around the hurting, as Jesus did for us
- Participation in the Spirit - every bit of life dependent on Him and His filling
- Affection and sympathy - the root and the fruit, the feelings and the action
