October 1, 2023 Preacher: Trent Henderson Series: Gospel of John
Topic: Faith Scripture: John 7:1–24
John 7:1-15
Two Kinds of Unbelief
- Agenda: if you were the Messiah, you wouldn't act like this
- Shame on you, God
- Why do bad things happen to good people?
- Affirmation: if you were the Messiah, you wouldn't talk like this
- Contradiction and disagreement are risks you run in a genuine relationship
John 7:16-24
Overcoming Unbelief
- Stay rooted (v. 16)
- Jesus is committed to saying what the Father has said (John 12:49-50)
- Jesus is the point of what the Father is saying (John 5:39)
- Jesus is in the flow of God's revelation to us - there is consistency
- Inviting willingnesss (v. 17)
- Debate can clarify issues but cannot settle them
- Obedience results in authentication (and shows the inconsistency of life apart from Him)
- Keeping mission (v. 22-23)
- The mission is wholeness
- Expect opposition
- Kingdom cannot be understood apart from the mission of wholeness
