John 17:11-19
Right before going to the cross, what is Jesus most concerned with?
- For the Father to keep the disciples "by His name"
- Means to remain aligned with His character
- The same character which Jesus revealed by His life
- We are to reflect this same character we see revealed by Jesus
- As we do, God will build a unique unity among His people
- We have more proundly in common with other believers than anyone else, no matter our seeming differences
How to pursue unity despite diversity
- Consistent commitment to the people of God
- Charity with those from different backgrounds from you
- Sticking with it for the long haul
Jesus is for our joy
- The ultimate goal of His prayer (v. 13)
- Also the goal of His teaching (John 15:11) and coming (John 10:10)
- Where do we find joy fulfilled?
- World: by following our heart
- Bible: by following and obeying God (being kept by His name)
In the world, not of the world
- The world responds with hostility (v. 14)
- Jesus prays (again) for our protection (v. 15)
- And we are sent on mission (v. 18)
